Changing the story to change the system
In an era where disinformation and polarization distort public understanding worldwide, ZAM presents African independent, public-interest storytelling that exposes systems of kleptocracy, challenges exploitation and defends free expression.
ZAM is a transnational media platform publishing from the Netherlands. We amplify the work of African journalists, artists and thinkers who confront entrenched inequality and map out a new shared future for Africa and Europe. By connecting African and diaspora voices with European publics, we build informed, inspirational, justice-driven conversation across borders.
Rooted in the anti-apartheid movements of the 1980’s, we exist today to disrupt Western stereotypes and support African efforts to counter neo-colonialism. We stand in solidarity with forces on both continents that resist oppression and strive for democratic justice.
ZAM platforms the work of African journalists, artists and thinkers because changing the story is part of changing a system of inequality and extraction. We believe that informed, justice-driven conversation between the continents is essential for building Africa and Europe’s shared future
As global powers revert to blatant imperialism, ZAM brings the other story. Our investigative reporting, cultural production and future-crafting programmes not only shift prevailing narratives on Africa, but also challenge the ideas through which the West understands itself.
Narrative power shapes political reality. As ZAM designer Phila Hillie puts it, “The power of cultural production is to not only critique systems, but to imagine alternatives that are built by everyone for everyone. What we build now becomes what we inherit tomorrow.”

Your ongoing support enables African changemakers and creatives to work with even greater vigour in building fair and free societies for the future. To agitate against abuse of power and theft. And to shape a vision of a new relationship between Africa and Europe based on equality and autonomy. In the sixteen years of our existence, ZAM has developed a unique solidarity model that connects globally renowned artists and African creative thinkers. Artists donate their work to ZAM which we in turn offer to our subscribers, followers and supporters.
The proceeds from sales enable us to set up new research projects, artistic collaborations, investigations and events that bring the work of our creative community in Africa and the diaspora to audiences in the Netherlands and beyond.
Artists like Marlene Dumas, Anton Corbijn, Zanele Muholi, Berend Strik, and Nontsikelelo Veleko have all donated work in the past. This year we add Clifford Charles, Nat Mokgosi, Ignacio Gumucio, Patricia Kaersenhout, Ruan Hoffman, Meschac Gaba, Sindiso Nyoni and many more to the roster.

ZAM’s Mission
To visualize and give form to a new, future relationship between Africa and the West. ZAM is imagining a world with no ‘them’ and ‘us’.
Vision
To connect, publicise and celebrate a new generation of African future makers in investigative journalism, photography, writing, arts and thought leadership.
Objectives
- ZAM serves as a platform to introduce the work of African creatives to international audiences.
- ZAM introduces new perspectives and thinking in African countries into public discourse for global impact.
- ZAM is an incubator space and visitor centre to promote new ideas, creative expression and collaborative research.
- ZAM builds an international alliance for shared impact.
Autonomy
ZAM adheres to the principles of independent journalism. We approach issues with an open mind and boundless curiosity, exempted from commercial and institutional agendas, and with a respect for fairness and integrity.
Balance
Equal representation of gender, sexual and regional diversity is key to our editorial policy.
Inclusion
We focus on the work of African creatives. Through publication in our multimedia channels, ZAM breaks the dividing lines that exclude an African information flow from the general offer.
Agency
Our emphasis is on the ability of people to design their own future and fight inequality, the abuse of power and other injustices. In our view, these struggles have an impact that far exceeds the local or regional interest.
Multiplicity
ZAM is averse to cliché and stereotyping. We are inspired by Chimananda Ngozi Adichie's plea for a diversity of approaches to 'Africa' to avoid the dangers of a 'single story'. ZAM rejects generalisations like 'the doomed continent' or 'Africa rising’.
Non-racialism
The legacy of Nelson Mandela is strongly represented in ZAM's DNA. Through numerous productions, our platform gives shape to critical reflection on the meaning of the struggles against apartheid and colonialism. ZAM is aware of the urgency involved in striving for a truly non-racial and non-sexist society. We need to do this within a context of anti-racism, decolonisation and equal rights for LGBTIQ people.
Editorial Process
The process of selection, interaction with authors, editing and publishing is led by the Editor-in-Chief in close co-operation with the in-house Editorial team. Stories and themes are processed through the team's research, input by the network of contributors and presented pitches. ZAM adopts a hands on approach when engaging authors with direct feedback and editorial input.
Submissions
ZAM does not generally accept unsolicited submissions. That said, if you have an idea for a story that you feel is a good fit for ZAM’s Editorial Policy please send a short summary of no more than ten lines to

Crossmedia
Our stories have many outlets: online and print, through our social media channels, through syndication of stories to other media houses, but also through Studio ZAM events, conversations and the annual Nelson Mandela Lecture. Our team is constantly exploring new avenues for publishing and distrubting content, with a view to promoting interaction between authors, editors and readership.
Style
Accessibility of language for wider, interested audiences is crucial. Therefore, political, artistic, developmental, activist and other jargon should be avoided as much as possible.
ZAM's house style is based on the Oxford English Style Guide.
Contributor's rights & duties
Contributors are protected against unfair treatment, careless editing and unwanted interference by third parties, individuals or organisations. We expect contributors to have productions that are thoughtful, original, well-researched, intellectually challenging, uncompromising through freedom from plagiarism or deception, and free from any commercial or political interference.

ZAM subscribes to the GIJN list of protocols for fact checking.
Remunerations
As a policy, ZAM pays for commissioned content. We are a non-profit organisation and the available editorial budget is modest.

Amsterdam, 20 december 2016
Dear friend of ZAM,
ZAM promotes and supports a new generation of African change makers. Following in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela, the investigative journalists, thinkers, photographers and activists in our network are at the forefront of struggles against the abuse of power, deceitful propaganda, corruption and human rights violations in over fifty African countries. They shape the future of the continent through their active resistance, their speaking of truth to power and their creative interventions. The ZAM network unites these pioneers and provides a platform to highlight their lived realities. Together, we question the status quo and provide alternatives.
Recognition
These outputs from our network are increasingly recognised by international media houses, by the established temples of arts and culture and by policy institutions. We want to further open up these bastions and introduce different perspectives into global debates and decision making. We initiate exciting collaborations like the upcoming Apartheid Revisited project, where we’ll be exploring an eerie history. ZAM’s project is an urgent undertaking at a time when new walls are built, borders are tightened and the world is more and more divided between 'them' and 'us'.
Results
Expanding the magazine beyond Southern Africa to cover Sub-Saharan Africa through the investigations of our pioneering partner, the African Investigative Publishing Collective (AIPC), was a first significant achievement in this regard. ZAM’s promotion within Europe and the US of the work done by the AIPC has led to articles by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, Muno Gedi, Tobore Ovuorie and Idris Akinbajo (amongst others) being featured in Western news publications. Our Uneasy Truths series representing the finest of African investigative journalism was published in twelve countries: seven African and five European.
Building a sustainable financial future together
For ZAM and its network to continue to operate we urgently need your support. Our overheads are very modest, but the network cannot be maintained, nor can its members be supported, without help. Remuneration is an essential lifeline for all our authors, activists, researchers, photographers, columnists, inventors and creators of fascinating projects.
Our goal: 25 000 euros by March 2017
Next year ZAM will celebrate its first ten years as an independent platform. The target we need to reach in order to keep operating by 1 March 2017 is €25 000. This will create a foundation for a larger promotion and fundraising campaign in 2017.Every donation, no matter how small, is important to ensure we can continue our work.
You can transfer your donation to NL16 INGB 0003 6551 77 (SWIFT/BIC: INGBNL2A) of the ZAM-net Foundation.
If you would prefer to receive an invoice or use another payment method please visit www.zammagazine.com/make-a-donation. For our Dutch friends: ZAM has an ANBI status, making your donation in the Netherlands tax deductible.
Help us celebrate our 10th anniversary together.
Thank you!

Laten wij geZAMenlijk ZAM sterker maken!
Amsterdam, 1 december 2016
Geachte heer / mevrouw,
ZAM–ZAM
Laten wij nú samen ZAM sterker maken. ZAM-ZAM dus.
Zoals gezegd: volgend jaar bestaat ZAM 10 jaar.
Hartelijke groet,
Ton Bervoets (adviseur), Evelien Groenink (investigations editor), Bart Luirink (hoofdredacteur), Randall Maarman (bestuurslid), Jan Meijer (penningmeester), Babah Tarawally (bestuurslid), Alexander van Trigt (bestuurslid), Leonie Verburg (medewerker), Annelies Verdoolaege (voorzitter), Gerard Wieffer (secretaris)

– Het onderzoek naar de 'war on terror' in Afrika, de rol van hekserij in politieke machtsstrijd en de effectiviteit van campagnes tegen malaria waaraan momenteel de laatste hand gelegd wordt;
– De ontwikkeling van Multiverse, een serie van vijf documentaires over wetenschapsbeoefening in Afrika, een initiatief van filmmaker Juul van der Laan. ZAM organiseerde i.s.m. De Balie eerder dit jaar de wereldpremiere van de eerste aflevering over Ghana;

To support and promote a new generation of African changemakers in investigative journalism, photography, writing, arts and thinking.
Hardcore prejudices and broadly ingrained perceptions about 'Africa' are up for revision. What better than examine the everyday realities of a hugely diverse continent through the eyes of African investigative journalists, photographers, artists, commentators and rebels. ZAM enables their investigative and creative journeys and presents them to audiences worldwide. ZAM builds solidarity in networks and collaborations. They are rooted in a conviction that todays issues of rich and poor, black and white, tradition and modernity are universal issues.
