“Europe is living under the illusion that you can have a community without strangers.” (Achille Mbembe)

African communities are here to stay.

Deals with African countries aimed at limited migration? Walls, barriers, border control? Whatever the 'strong measures' Western leaders are announcing, people still find their way around the globe. African communities are everywhere and they are 'here' to stay. Photographer Pieter van der Houwen's portraits of the diaspora in Glasgow, Ghuangzhou, Staten Island, Johannesburg and Lagos show a different world. Van der Houwen's pictures are at the centre of the latest edition of African Tabloid, a ZAM special - designed by advertising guru and artist Erik Kessels, with text by Achille Mbembe.
