Recently, American media reported on discussions between Israel and several African countries regarding the potential resettlement of Palestinians displaced from their land. Although official spokespeople claim to be unaware of such talks, it appears plausible that countries such as Sudan, Somaliland, Somalia, South Sudan, Rwanda, Chad, and the DRC are considering this option. US President Trump has previously entertained the idea, describing the West African nations involved as a “beautiful area.” Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu has praised Trump for his “bold vision,” framing the initiative as a matter of “voluntary migration.”
Some may be shocked by the “Africa for Sale” policies of the regimes in the countries mentioned above. While the African Union (AU) has issued strong statements condemning the genocide in Gaza, the Palestinian issue reveals a deep divide. Kenya, Rwanda, and Ghana, for instance, maintain a clearly pro-Israel stance. These countries, along with others, supported Israel's ultimately rejected request for observer status at the AU in 2021. Over the past decade, at least thirteen African countries have purchased weapons from Israel, and even more collaborate with Israeli companies in areas such as counterterrorism, border control, and defence.
The anti-Western rhetoric of many leaders in these countries cannot obscure their complicity in Western silence regarding the destruction of Gaza and the colonisation of the West Bank. At the same time, significant portions of the population in these countries support the Palestinian struggle for self-determination, just as Palestinians once expressed solidarity with Africa’s fight for independence. This reciprocal yearning for freedom is powerfully captured in Nelson Mandela’s assertion during the 1997 International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People: “But we know too well that our freedom is incomplete without the freedom of the Palestinians.”
Africa has long been positioned as both a source of wealth for Western powers and a dumping ground for their undesirables, from the transatlantic slave trade and colonial exploitation to contemporary debates surrounding Gaza. In this regard, history reveals a disturbing continuity. Equally enduring, however, is the complicity of authoritarian African leaders who have repeatedly facilitated such atrocities.

Hoewel officiële woordvoerders verklaren van zulke gesprekken niet op de hoogte te zijn, lijkt het aannemelijk dat landen als Sudan, Somaliland, Somalia, South Sudan, Rwanda, Chad en de DRC deze opvang overwegen. US President Trump speelde al eerder met die gedachte en sprak in dit verband over West Afrikaanse landen als een “beautiful area”. Israel’s Chief Warlord Netanyahu prees Trump vervolgens om zijn “bold vision”. Het zou, volgens hem, gaan om “voluntary migration. ”
Sommige mensen zullen geshockeerd zijn over deze ‘Africa for Sale’ politiek van de regimes in voornoemde landen. Maar hoewel de Afrikaanse Unie scherpe statements heeft gemaakt over de genocide in Gaza, legt de Palestinakwestie een stevige breuklijn bloot. Kenya, Rwanda en Ghana volgen een duidelijke pro-Israël politiek. Deze en andere landen steunden in 2021 het uiteindelijk afgewezen verzoek van Israel om observer status bij de AU. Zeker dertien Afrikaanse landen kochten in het afgelopen decennium wapens van Israel. Nog meer landen werken met Isreaelische bedrijven op het gebied van counter terrorisme, border control en defensie.
De anti-Westerse retoriek van veel leiders in deze landen kan niet verhullen dat deze leiders medeplichtig zijn aan het Westerse zwijgen over de vernietiging van Gaza en de kolonisering van de Westbank. Tegelijkertijd steunen grote delen van de bevolking in deze landen het Palestijnse streven naar zelfbeschikking, zoals de Palestijnen zich destijds solidariseerden met de Afrikaanse onafhankelijkheidsstrijd. De wederkerigheid van het vrijheidsverlangen kan ook worden afgeleid uit Nelson Mandela’s verklaring dat “we will never be free as long as the Palestinians are not free.”
Afrika is zowel een wingewest voor Westerse explorers als een afvalputje voor undesirables, van de slavernij tot het kolonialisme tot de huidige gesprekken over Gaza. De geschiedenis vertoont wat dat betreft een angstaanjagende consistentie. Maar ook de bereidheid van autoritaire Afrikaanse leiders om deze wantoestanden te faciliteren kent een lange geschiedenis.
