How do African theater artists see the world? What themes preoccupy them? What is the state of the (growing) arts sector in Africa? These and more questions form the basis of this program, presented by Afrovibes, the foundation hosting the annual festival of the most exciting, provocative and contemporary ideas and shows connecting artists, empowering people.

Looking for Ghana & The Red Suitcase
This programme includes two short films by Lhola Amira, introduced by Jay Pather.
Lhola Amira (1984) lives and works in Cape Town. As an interdisciplinary artist from South Africa, Amira adopts the use of photography, video and sculpture, while defining THEIR practice as ‘Appearance’ – a term that draws from African Nguni spiritualism.
Looking for Ghana & The Red Suitcase is part of an art installation in which Amira physically explores assumptions and contradictions about and associations with the current definition of Africa. In this film, which she made in collaboration with three Ghanaian artists, she walks through Ghana, as a proud, Black queer, looking for a glimpse of freedom and decolonization.
In LAGOM - Breaking Bread with The Self-Righteous, Lhola Amira follows the suitcase, that represents the burden of historical trauma, in Sweden. With its striking presence, it challenges the civilized image of this Scandinavian country with a little-known colonial past.
About the other participants in the programme
Pim Deul (1964) is a lawyer at PDD Legal and active in the arts and heritage sector. An art enthusiast, he is the initiator of the online Pimple's Art Platform, which presents and celebrates Black Art. He is also a co-founder of Smart Black Collective a diverse collective of intellectuals and professionals. Deul dedicates himself selflessly to organizations and individuals trying to make a difference in the social sphere.
Jay Pather (1959) is artistic director of the Afrovibes festival and curator of the Live Arts Festival in Cape Town. He is also a professor at the University of Cape Town, director of the Institute for Creative Arts and artistic director of the Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre in Durban. Pather has made many theater and dance productions, including What Remains, Firebird, Rite and Body of Evidence.
Marjorie Boston (b. 1964) is programmer/curator of the Afrovibes festival and, as of 2013, director/director of RICHTABOUTNOW INC. an urban production house and development venue. She is also a programmer at the Toneelschuur in Haarlem. Until 2012, Boston was director at Amsterdam's MC Theater. Finally, as of 2018, she is a board member of the Boven het IJ festival.
Quinsy Gario is a performance poet and artist from Curacao and St. Maarten. He is a member of the Family Connection, founded in 2005 by his mother Glenda Martinus. The Dutch colonial practice runs like a thread through Gario's artistic career. His most famous work: Zwarte Piet is Racisme. Gario's work has been shown at the Van Abbe Museum, MACBA (Barcelona), Latvian National Museum of Art (Riga) and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), among others.
Kimberley Agyarko is an actress and playwright. She graduated in 2020 with the play The Encounter and subsequently starred in a series of productions, including Ik Voel Amoer, Wie is Baas, Karaba de Toverheks en Swipe Island. Afrovibes produced her first podcast, Overseas, in 2020.

Looking for Ghana & The Red Suitcase
Deel van het programma zijn twee korte films van Lhola Amira, toegelicht door Jay Pather.
De short Looking for Ghana & The Red Suitcase is onderdeel van een kunstinstallatie waarin Amira op een fysieke manier onderzoek doet naar aannames en tegenstrijdigheden over en associaties met de huidige definitie van Afrika. In deze film, die ze maakte in samenwerking met drie Ghanese kunstenaars, loopt ze door Ghana, als een trotse, Zwarte queer, op zoek naar een glimp van vrijheid en dekolonisatie.
In LAGOM - Breaking Bread with The Self-Righteous volgt Lhola Amira de koffer in Zweden. De koffer vertegenwoordigt de last van een historisch trauma. Met haar opvallende aanwezigheid daagt ze het beschaafde imago van het Scandinavische land uit, een land met een weinig bekend koloniaal verleden.
Lhola Amira is een multimediale kunstenaar; hen maakt foto’s, video’s en sculpturen. De in Zuid-Afrika geboren en woonachtige Amir heeft inmiddels de hele wereld over gereisd, van residencies in Spanje en Pakistan tot tentoonstellingen in San Francisco, Parijs en Londen, tot filmfestivals in Brazilië en Zweden.

Pim Deul (1964) is jurist bij PDD Legal en actief in de kunst- en erfgoedsector. Als kunstliefhebber is hij initiatiefnemer van het online Pimple’s Art Platform, dat Black Art presenteert en viert. Ook is hij medeoprichter van Smart Zwart Collective een divers collectief van intellectuelen en professionals. Deul zet zich belangeloos in voor organisaties en personen die op maatschappelijk gebied het verschil proberen te maken.
Jay Pather (1959) is artistiek leider van het Afrovibes festival en curator van het Live Arts Festival in Kaapstad. Hij is tevens professor aan de University of Cape Town, directeur van het Institute for Creative Arts en artistiek leider van het Siwela Sonke Dance Theatre in Durban. Pather maakte vele theater- en dansproducties, waaronder What Remains, Firebird, Rite en Body of Evidence.
Marjorie Boston (1964) is programmeur/curator van het Afrovibes festival en, vanaf 2013, directeur/bestuurder van RICHTABOUTNOW INC., een urban productiehuis en ontwikkelplek. Ook is zij programmeur bij de Toneelschuur in Haarlem. Tot 2012 was Boston directeur bij het Amsterdamse MC Theater. Tenslotte is zij vanaf 2018 bestuurslid van het Boven het IJ festival.
