Emmanuelle Andrianjafy text

Andrianjafy is not interested in the idea that the West has of the African continent or fighting existing narratives amongst Western audiences, she says in an interview with ASX. This blissful attitude is key to the photographer’s open and unhindered gaze. The conscious lack of an agenda to re-educate those – read: predominantly white – folks who project their fantasies and fears on a reality they do not really see is a true blessing. Enter Andrianjafy’s world. “We should put our energy in telling ourselves and the world our stories, the ordinary, pleasant, unpleasant (…). Maybe once the West has a different idea of the continent, they will start taking different pictures”, she says.
