15.09.16 Screening and Q&A | Mac McKenzie & Mama Goema: The Cape Town Beat in Five Movements

A still from Mama Goema

A collaboration between ZAM, Afrovibes and Galerie 23 brings you a momentous documentary about the works of this Capetonian musician and his search for the roots and diversity of the cities' Goema music.

Inspired by Cape Town's carnival culture, young musicians developed the local rythms into todays beat – a mixture of rock from the eighties and homebrew jazz. A telling story about the sounds of past and present, brought together by the band leader turned conductor of the Cape Town symphonical orchestra, Mac McKenzie.

The screening will be followed by a Q & A with McKenzie and a life improvisation with fellow musicians.

Join us at Thursday 15 September 2016, 8h30 PM at Galerie 23, KNSM-laan 307 – 309 in Amsterdam. Register at eventbrite.

In 1987, Mac McKenzie participated in the Culture in Another South Africa (CASA) conference and festival in Amsterdam. Watch footage of a performance by McKenzie and The Genuines in Before Dawn, a film by Maarten Rens here.
