A bouquet of contemporary African cinema is part of the 8th edition of Rialto's World Cinema Festival.

With Actual Africa this year’s edition of World Cinema Amsterdam dives into Sub-Saharan African cinema, featuring twenty films from ten countries. Revealing relevant and topical insights into the depicted countries, the selection also provides a crystal clear image of the continent’s cultural wealth and diversity and thereby subverts persistent negative stereotypes and poor imaging. The result is an exquisite palette of films, each of which provides abundant food for thought.

There will be plenty of time to discuss during the introductions to and Q&A sessions after the films. In collaboration with numerous African-Dutch organisations a programme was compiled that focuses on various topical themes and urgent issues. On the opening day of Actual Africa (August 19th), the imaging and stereotyping of the African continent will be discussed in the talk show ‘THE POSITIVE IMAGE OF AFRICA?! ’. The question how existing images influence filmmakers will be debated by African directors participating in the festival, who will share their experience and expertise on these matters. The talk show will be moderated by Congolese-Dutch writer Kiza Magendane after an introduction by Jerry Afriyie. The opening day will end in style with the swinging Actual African Party.
